Burger Bar Removal and Reinstallation for P&O Cruises

Time-critical removal and reinstallation of a burger bar to enable deck repairs on a live P&O Cruises vessel, completed within a 10-day turnaround.

Overview

JC Stainless Solutions was brought in to support a time-critical repair project onboard a P&O Cruises vessel, where a heavily eroded section of deck beneath a busy burger bar had become both a safety risk and a visual issue. With the ship still in active service and only a 10-day turnaround available, the challenge was clear: remove the burger bar with minimal disruption and damage, allow the deck repair works to take place, then reinstall the entire structure quickly and precisely so it was fully operational again as soon as possible.

The work had to be completed to an exceptionally high standard in a live cruise environment, where delays, disruption, and poor presentation could lead directly to passenger complaints and reputational damage.

The Problem

The burger bar was located directly over a section of deck that had deteriorated to a serious extent. The floor had become so badly eroded that in places the deck beneath was visible. This created several immediate issues:

• A clear safety concern for passengers and crew

• A visibly poor standard of finish in a customer-facing area

• A risk of further deterioration if left unresolved

• Operational pressure, because the vessel remained in service throughout

The burger bar itself complicated the repair process. Before the deck could be repaired by the appointed flooring subcontractor, the entire burger bar installation needed to be carefully dismantled and removed. This had to be done without causing unnecessary damage to the structure, surrounding finishes, or components that would later need to be reinstalled.

Adding to the pressure, P&O Cruises had allocated a substantial complaints budget in anticipation of disruption during the works. On a live vessel, even minor delays or poor workmanship can quickly affect the guest experience, especially in popular food service areas.

The Challenge

This was not a straightforward strip-out and refit.

JC Stainless Solutions had to operate within a very tight 10-day turnaround, coordinating around other contractors while working on a live cruise ship. The project demanded:

Our Approach

JC Stainless Solutions approached the project with a clear focus on precision, speed, and coordination.

1

Supporting the repair programme

The first stage was to remove the burger bar in a controlled and methodical way. Because the bar needed to be reinstalled after the deck repairs, it was essential that the removal process protected the integrity of the structure and its components.

Our team worked carefully to dismantle and lift out the installation with minimal damage, ensuring that everything was preserved and prepared for rapid reinstatement once the flooring works had been completed.

2

Supporting the repair programme

With the burger bar removed, the flooring subcontractor was able to access and repair the severely eroded deck area beneath. The deterioration had reached a point where the condition of the floor was both dangerous and visually unacceptable, so restoring the surface was critical not only for safety, but also for maintaining the expected presentation standards onboard.

Throughout this stage, JC Stainless Solutions remained aligned with the wider repair schedule to ensure no time was lost between phases.

3

Fast-track reinstallation

Once the deck repairs were complete, our team moved quickly to reinstall the burger bar. Because the vessel was still operating and the food outlet needed to return to service as soon as possible, speed was essential, but not at the expense of quality.

The burger bar was reinstated efficiently and accurately, fully ready to resume service in record time. The area was restored to a safe, functional, and presentable condition, allowing operations to restart with minimal ongoing disruption.

The Result

The project was completed successfully within the 10-day turnaround window, with the burger bar removed, the deck repaired by the relevant subcontractor, and the full installation reinstated and ready for use.

Most importantly, the work was delivered so efficiently that the expected disruption to passengers was dramatically reduced. Despite P&O Cruises setting aside a significant budget for complaints during the repair period, only a single complaint was made.

That outcome speaks directly to the effectiveness of the planning, coordination, and delivery.

Key outcomes:

This case study highlights JC Stainless Solutions’ ability to perform complex removal and reinstatement works in high-pressure, operational environments where downtime, presentation, and customer experience all matter.

Working onboard a live cruise vessel requires more than technical capability. It demands planning, care, flexibility, and the ability to coordinate seamlessly with other trades under strict time constraints. In this case, JC Stainless Solutions delivered exactly that, helping transform a dangerous and unsightly area into a fully restored operational space with minimal impact on the customer experience.
