Cold Room and Freezer Repair for P&O Cruises

Repair and protection of damaged cold room and freezer panels with installation of guard rails to prevent future impact damage.

Overview

JC Stainless Solutions was engaged by P&O Cruises to repair and protect a cold room and freezer area that had suffered ongoing damage through regular operational use. With heavy machinery moving in and out each week for restocking, the side wall panels had become damaged over time, leading to rips, tears, and failed seals.

This was more than a cosmetic issue. The damaged panels were allowing ice build-up, affecting performance, hygiene, and compliance, while also creating concerns around USPH compliance. The brief was to restore the room to a compliant standard and provide a longer-term solution that would help prevent the same problem from happening again.

The Problem

The cold room and freezer were exposed to frequent impact damage caused by the day-to-day movement of heavy stocking machinery. As equipment passed in and out of the space every week, the side panels were repeatedly struck, causing visible wear and more serious structural issues over time.

This led to:

• Rips and tears in the wall panels

• Broken seals within the cold room and freezer envelope

• Ice build-up caused by compromised insulation and sealing

• A non-compliant environment

• Increased risk of failing USPH compliance standards

In high-demand catering and food storage environments onboard ship, cold rooms and freezers need to remain fully sealed, hygienic, and operational at all times. Repeated panel damage was putting that at risk.

The Challenge

The challenge was not only to repair the visible damage, but to provide a solution that would stand up to ongoing operational pressure. Simply fixing the panels would not be enough if the same machinery continued to hit the walls week after week.

P&O Cruises needed a repair that would:

Our Approach

JC Stainless Solutions carried out a practical, durable repair strategy tailored to the operating conditions of the space.

1

Overcladding with approved vendor panels

To ensure the repair met the required standards, we used the client’s approved vendor panels and carried out a full overclad installation to the damaged side walls. This restored the panel surfaces, addressed the compromised areas, and helped re-establish the correct sealed environment required for cold room and freezer operation.

The installation was completed to a high standard, with close attention to finish, fit, and durability.

2

Identifying the root cause

Rather than only treating the symptoms of the damage, we also looked at why the issue kept happening. It was clear that repeated impact from heavy machinery was the ongoing cause of failure, and without a physical barrier the walls would continue to be damaged over time.

3

Recommending and installing guard rails

To prevent further impact damage, JC Stainless Solutions recommended the installation of guard rails to protect the repaired wall panels. These were then installed as part of the solution, creating a strong protective barrier between the moving equipment and the cold room walls.

This added a long-term preventative measure, helping protect the integrity of the repair well beyond the immediate project.

The Result

The completed works delivered a fully restored and compliant cold room and freezer area for P&O Cruises.

The damaged panels were professionally repaired using approved materials, the integrity of the room was reinstated, and the installation of guard rails provided an attractive and effective form of ongoing protection.

Key outcomes:

This project demonstrates JC Stainless Solutions’ ability to deliver not just repairs, but practical long-term solutions. For P&O Cruises, the outcome was a compliant, protected, and professionally finished cold room and freezer space that is better equipped to withstand the demands of regular operational use.

By combining approved repair methods with preventative protection, JC Stainless Solutions helped turn a recurring maintenance issue into a durable and future-focused result.
